book review by Rolando Gomez
Portfolio is a photography collection from the personal portfolio of Art Ketchum. The book showcases "all the secrets of his unique style of lighting, styling, and posing he uses…."

A book of 100 plus images of Ketchum’s personal portfolio and how he accomplished those images, as well as sub-parts located throughout the book that offer tips.

The book is easy to read and illustrated in full-color. The abundance of images in
Portfolio are thoroughly explained with text and diagrams on how the images were created. Throughout the pages in Portfolio, the reader will find "shaded gray boxes" focusing on a specific tip—basically the audience is receiving two books for the price of one.

While this is a wealth of great information, personally I think these helpful tips should be broken down into separate chapters, at the end of the book, or throughout the book; but valuable information well worth the price of the book.

The book comes complete with a great glossary of photographic terms—one would normally place this in the back of the book with any appendices; Ketchum, or his publisher chose to place this toward the front of the book. With this book, it works fine, as it helps the reader understand the terminology before reading about the over 14 types of lighting discussed in this book.

Ketchum does a great job of sharing his knowledge, not only in the images presented, but in his experiences throughout his career. You learn a lot about Ketchum, and how he thinks—which I personally found inspirational as I juggle with my photography career—this book may be the motivator I’ve been looking for.

Ketchum’s credentials as an established author with two books already under his belt, along with publication in almost every photography magazine throughout his 22 plus years as a photographer says it all—he understands marketing and can produce great images—a rare commodity found in people.

His clients have included Ace Hardware, Sears, Dayton Hudson Co., Shell Oil and others and he has taught at the Winona School of Photography and often hosts photography workshops. For more information, please visit Art’s website at http://www.artketchum.com
