I have just made the transition into Digital Photography with my purchase of a Nikon D1X body and I am having trouble with getting the camera set right for sports photography.

I shoot a variety of sports including baseball, soccer, and bicycle racing. I am trying to get the settings on the body set up to give me the best performance from my camera and so far I am not as happy as I feel I could be with the way the camera is set up.

Basically, I have two controls that affect the focusing system in my camera and thus the quality of the photos, the Focus controller (Single Shot or Continious) and the Predictive Focus controller (Single Zone or Multi-Zone).

If anyone can give me their experiences with setting these controls and which settings appear to yield the best results for action sports I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks to all.

I'm mostly a Canon shooter..... although one of the companies I freelance for allows me to use their Nikon gear... but I only use it for portraits.. where I manual focus using the 80-200 AFS lens.. With my Canon gear, I like to use the center AF point.....unless I am setting up the shotwhere I want the subject to be in a certain center.. The most reliable AF point is the one in the center...(Canon)..most of the sports shooters I know don't use the "wide area" AF area because the camera has more control over which part of the subject you will focus on....

I hope I was able to offer up some help!
