I just purchased my first monolight (JTL Versalight 200). I don't have studio space to do a multi light set up. I will mainly be doing portraits of individuals, small groups and possibly some glamour work. My question is; can I get consistant results with one monolight, an umbrella (54" Photek softlighter II)and a 45 watt slave for back lighting. I'm interested in exporing reflectors for fill. Please help.

One light is a very good way to learn lighting. You will need some sort of reflector. White foam core works well. Play around and what what changing the lights position will do to the contours of your models face. Use the reflector to soften the shadows. Below is an image shot with one light with two grids on the front, no reflectors. Model is Karen from atlanta

Yes, you can get consistent results and there’s a lot you can do with just one light but I would highly recommend the reflectors and foamcore. You’ll need a stand or support for them though if you’re working alone.

Here's one with one light shot through an umbrella:

And for dramatic effect:

I would keep your groups small though if you have limited space.
