Well, I'm assuming it's some kind of chromatic aberration; this is the only time that it occurs in the set...

I'm curious to know what caused it, and how to prevent it, or if it's just a fluke of optics and electronics...

This was a killer shot until I saw that...

Jon:

Remembering the shoot and location I am guessing that light was reflected at just the correct angle off the shinning surface from the reflector and you are getting a flare.

I think the Mexican Air Force saw four of these last week and are calling them UFOs. In your case it is an Unidentified Friggin Object. Actually I think you got a lens flare bouncing off from all that stainless steel or something like a double bounce from reflector to steel to lens.

Looks like Blooming pixels to me. You get too much light on a portion of the sensor and it can "Bloom" across the sensor. It's kind of like flair except it's on the digital sensor instead of across lens elements. It also tends to be in the shape of the area that caused the bloom.
I'm guessing that this is a cropped section of the total file, look around the full photo for a bright spot that has that little notch looking thing in it.

Bingo. It was a bear to find it too, actually...

So...The burning question now is, is it preventable? Or is it just a write-off as "it's just going to happen once in a while?"

Thanks all...!

I'm certainly no expert in the area, but in my experience with spectroscopic intrumentation and sensor bloom, I wouldn't expect to see the "puzzle piece" configuration, but rather a circular area of white surrounded by rings of colors.

I can imagine a "shaped" lens flare, but it's hard to imagine what would cause THAT particular shape. I showed this image to a friend who's had a considerable amount of experience with optical instrumentation (although not photographic experience) and he suggested a light source striking your lens momentarily - like a reflection of sunlight from a car, etc. Uh - he actually also suggested a momentary laser strike, but that seems less likely to me.

This is the only frame to show such an effect, right? Out of about how many during that period?

Yup, it's just one of those things. But you can do some things to avoid it.
Watch out shooting against highly reflective objects and what angle the light is going to be comming back at you.
Try not to horribly over expose areas of your image. I first encountered this not to long after I started using digital. I was shooting a model in a window on a bright day I exposed for her face and let the sky blow out. That didn't work well at all.

Yes, it's the only image out of approximately 400 captures from that set.

Hmm...You know, a laser or (more likely) an IR beam strike is actually not totally out of the realm of possibility...If everything were lined up perfectly...

But interestingl, I *did* find a corresponding area.

Thanks for your time!

If you asked this question in a "paranormal" forum the would tell you it is a "spirit orb".
