I know a guy who shoots surfer shots with his 600mm and "stacks" extenders...like what you are mentioning... Well, let me put it this way..... I only use my 2x in a pinch....when I need the length...because it reduces the image quality of my prime lens so much that it looks a little soft.. but when you stack on a 70-200 zoom lens, I'll bet you you won't get get a half way crappy looking shot because all the images will look completely crappy!

Here's a shot I took in 97...of this bike race... I used a 400mm f2.8 Mark II with a 2.0 Teleconverter....making an 800mm f5.6 lens..... Shot on Fuji Super HG..( if I remember correctly)....rated 640 and scanned on my Minolta Multi film scanner..
