Will I be good to go with just 2 lights? A softbox and a background light along with a reflector for my fills or should I be looking to ad something else to my basic setup?

I only have two and can get some great exposures, but I am already wanting a couple more, one for a hair-light and the other as a backround light. But two will work fine. I have a softbox on one and a "bounced" umbrella on the other.

Casey is three heads. You can use one for a main and one for a fill and the third for either hair or background. You can also use one for main, a reflector for fill, one for hair and one for background. Another great scenario is one for main, two for background high key - and - one for main, two for kickers.

Robert

This shot of Lauren was three lights: A main beauty dish above camera, one kicker to her right (camera left) and a background light coming in from her above left.

I have to agree with Robert as well with 3 lights. It's what you need to have a well balanced set up.

ONE. One source, one shadow. Shadows can be filled in any number of ways, one by the very quality of the source itself (as well as distance from the subject), and through reflectors or bounceboard. One source, one shadow.

However this often is not enough. Add heads as needed. But never start with 2 or 3 or more simply because "that's the way so many people do it."
