I'm wanting to spend $750 to $1000 for a two light set up and I've been looking at both these units. Anyone had any exprerence with these? Also, will 400 w/s be enough light to shoot full body shots without siting the strobes in thier laps?

Question One: I have two Alien Bee 800s and they're fantastic.

Question Two: Yeah I usually shoot about f/8 1/500s (max flash sync on the D1x), and I rarely put either strobe above 50%. Won't be a problem.

I have a set of nearly antique Novtrons, bought used in about 1989 and I usually shoot with lightboxs or umbrellas at no more than half power 1/60 and f5.6. They have plenty of 'omph' for individuals or small groups. Only on rare occasions have I set the power to full strength. The attached pic was with Novatron heads in two softboxes at about f5.6.

I've found that someone who spent money on something will rarely tell you they made a mistake unless it was a huge mistake. That said I have Novatron 1000s and I have been very happy, rarely shoot at full power. I shoot a D1X and set it for Flash on White Balance with a -1 factor.

Hmmmm the 1600 are less than $400 each.. So if you already have stands and umbrellas, all you need is $800 total for the most powerful bee.

So far I have not had any problems with power, but I have not lit up king kong or anything, just regular models =)

I will buy more alienbees, and I love their support and access to accessories =) which are VERY good.

I have the AB800's and they work great. Don't get their stands or soft boxes though. But do get the AB Speed ring.

The power setting might depend on the softbox used. With a large Multi-dome I shoot at about 3/4 power and the fill flash bounce umbrella just under 1/2 power.

I have a pair of 400 and a pair of 800 Bees, both of which work terrifically for my purposes. I have four of their heavy duty stands and they are incredible, as well. Had used Bogen before and these seem much sturdier to me. I'm curious why the previous poster said to pass on the stands -- I always enjoy a good horror story ... lol
