I've always been told that a CTR has a much better pitcher for photograpy. I've told this by designers for years. I have a Viewsonic PF790 which I love and has served me well for years. I saw a Samsung 19" LCD yesterday and it was sharp as a tack. I would love to save the desk space but I'm not going to for a lesser quailty monitor. Anyone have any personal experence with a comparison of these two?

LCDs and CRTs (not CTR) are very similar in sharpness on the better units. But the viewing angle on cheaper-built LCDs is quite narrow. Move your head up and down and the density shifts, making adjustments to the image very difficult if not impossible. This doesn't happen on CRTs.

Now the better quality LCDs, which are designed for high-end photo and video editing have far larger viewing angles, and often are much sharper than same-size CRTs. But you'll pay for that level. I'd say about 3x the cost of an equivalent CRT, at least. Figure on $700 and up for a suitable 17" LCD, let alone 19".

I have a nice 19" crt that I bought just for photo editing. I also have a Sony Vaio laptop with a nice 17" lcd. Both are profiled using a colorvision spyder. It seems that I have the most time for editing while I'm on the road, which means using the laptop. I'm in various lighting conditions none of which are ideal for editing, but I do it anyway just to get it done. When I get home and pull everything back into the home system, the majority of the time everything looks fine. Of course both my systems could be screwed to the max and I just think everything looks great! Here's an image, what do you think?

I use an Apple 23" Cinema Display with my G4 and the quality is flawless. The viewing angle is pretty wide as well. I don't know the current quality of LCDs on the PC side but on the Mac it's pretty great.
