Okay, this is something that has happned before but which I just set aside as "one of those dumb things PC's might do that, as long as the system isn't destroyed, is just wierd and can easily be forgotten about". However, this has happned twice in the last month and this second time has broght something else with it.

Once in a while, I will open Photoshop and it will be like the first time I've used it! All the pallettes are undocked and reset and my color preferences need to be reset. But, all my plugins are still installed and my custom actions are still available.

What's the deal!? Why would it suddenly forget how I like things?

Now, and I've seen this before too but never did anything about it because it wasn't happening THAT often. Anyway, after using Capture One to convert a RAW file to an 8bit tiff, when trying to load it into Photoshop I get a profile mismatch. Except that the working profile listed is the exact same one as the embedded profile listed!!!! Excdept they can't be the same because the file in Photoshop is less saturated than the one in Capture One!

Why oh why is this happening to me right when I'm so busy with edits that need to be done?!

If anyone knows how to fix this I'd be most grateful! Thanks!

Without knowing which version you have, and just guessing, the newer versions of PS run a routine at the beginning where they basically contact Adobe to make sure you are cool and then it seems to compare known values and your prefernces. I am wondering if in this routine it does not find your preferences. If you are not a user of Photoshop User website, I can post the question to that forum and see if anyone knows what's happening.

Isn't that that really expensive magazine? I didn't know they had a forum site. If you don't mind that would be cool! Thanks.

with the PC version of Photoshop Dave, but on a Mac when that would happen it meant the preferences had been cleared or altered.

You can save your pallet positions up under Window>Workspace>Save Workspace, and give the set a name... this will be in memory and when you lose your arrangement just go to your named setting and reset. It's very kewl. You can also save different arrangements so you can switch for different needs - for instance if you are working on web graphics and have different pallets forward, etc.

Your preferences file has probably been moved or corrupted. Have you done a disk maintenance utility on the drive? (Disk First Aid for Macs, Scandisk for PC's, FSCK for *nix, or buy a copy of Norton Utilities for your OS.) Antivirus software up to date?

Otherwise, somehow you're resetting to factory default. I have no idea how you could do that by accident.
