One of the places to check out is dp review www.dpreview.com
They have lots of info on the various cameras and sensors.
The D1X sensor is a CCD (Charge Coupled Device), the Canon sensor is CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide). The CCD is inherently sharper -- but that's the miracle of Canon, they've made their CMOS as good. The CMOS sensor is cheaper and has a lower power consumption. The cost lets Canon be the one to put pressure on the market by underpricing their systems relative to the market. Remember when the D100 was $1999 and Canon brought out the 10D at $1499? Nikon shooters were giving up their old film bodies to cross over to Canon.
Of course, if you're in Houston you could come over to the Houston Center for Photography and take one of my digital photography courses....
