I'm on the verge of buying a Nikon D1X and a 2.8 zoom lens for a damn good price (his finance troubles are my gain). The problem is I'm a Canon guy so that means I'll have to re-learn a new system. I shoot with a D30 and EOS3. Besides more megapixels, what good things can you tell me about the Nikon D1X to ease my mind into learning a new camera? I checked out the reviews on Dpreview already and I wasn't too impressed by anyone's comments, then again I don't know anything about these guys who are giving the reviews. Tell me something good...actually tell me the downsides of shooting with a D1X too.

How about I just sell the D1X and buy a Canon 10D?!!

Thanks,

Fernando

Fernando,

Having not ever shot with a Canon, I can't really tell you the differences between the system you're used to using and the Nikon system.

Having said that, I can tell you some of the things that make me really like my D1x, and some things that I don't really like.

Things I like:
Write time. I never wait on the camera to write the file, like I hear other people saying they have to endure.

No lag time. I can turn the camera on and shoot within a second.

35 different custom settings.

Exposure control in 1/3 stops.

Control buttons in multiple locations so you can choose which best fits you.

Flash sync at 1/500th.

shoots at 3 frames per second, for up to 9 frames.

EXCELLENT color rendition.

The battery lasts forever, and is quick and easy to change out.

Things I don't like:
The camera is HEAVY. Your arm will HURT the first time you shoot for 6+ hours if you're not used to it.

5.47 megapixels. I wish it had more.

I'm sure there are other smaller things, but that's what's on the top of my head right now. How much're you gonna have to pay? I'm in the market for a back up D1x now. Been watching e-bay for both the camera and a 80-200 f2.8.

....in my opinion ( I shoot with a D1X ) if you don't need the durability and ruggedness of the D1X, the D100 is much easier to use in alot of ways, besides being much, much, cheaper.

I like the 10D idea

I think you may be onto something about getting a 10D rather than a Nikon. The sensor in the D100 may be better than the D1X and the sensor in the 10D is probably better as well. And you have all that Canon glass....

Remember -- you don't buy a body, you buy a system.

You have the canon glass - go with the 10D! The chip in the 10D is awesome, allows for beautiful images and no reason to relearn a new system and buy lenses. But, if you do go Nikon (let me know what lenses you have for Canon if you sell them.... LOL)

Thanks for the replies everyone. The price is so good that's it's tempting. I figure if I really don't like the Nikon system, I can always just sell it and buy myself a 10D (sorry Barb but our other mutal friend has dibs on it if I decide not to buy it). Reasons I'm buying a Nikon: one- to help my friend out; two - because I need more megapixels for my print work ; three - he just said he'd give me the flash and another lens too!

So I'm actually gaining a complete system. I can still shoot with my Canon gear if I need to shoot slides. So for now, no Canon gear for sale either Christopher. LOL

Bob, do you know where can I find out more about the difference of the sensors in each camera? Yeah, I'm betting technology is better in the 10D too.

Thanks again for the reponses!

I still want to hear more praises and horror stories!

One of the places to check out is dp review www.dpreview.com They have lots of info on the various cameras and sensors.

The D1X sensor is a CCD (Charge Coupled Device), the Canon sensor is CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide). The CCD is inherently sharper -- but that's the miracle of Canon, they've made their CMOS as good. The CMOS sensor is cheaper and has a lower power consumption. The cost lets Canon be the one to put pressure on the market by underpricing their systems relative to the market. Remember when the D100 was $1999 and Canon brought out the 10D at $1499? Nikon shooters were giving up their old film bodies to cross over to Canon.

Of course, if you're in Houston you could come over to the Houston Center for Photography and take one of my digital photography courses....
