.......what's teh prefered format for data [image] storage? i'm not inteested in music or movies. Also, what brand of disk is recommended? Would rather pay a bit more for data security.

Thanks,

-mp

I'd second Jayson's stand on DVD-R/W for backup. The advantages are even clearer if you're on a Mac using Toast - it has a stellar incremental backup system.

I disagree about storage though...I like DVD-R for storage over CD-R for the capacity. Yeah, they're not $39.99 for a spindle of 100 like CD_R's are, but at 4.7GB per disk, it's a better deal (to me).

Stay away from DVD-RAM, DVD+R, and DVD+R/W...I've had poor experiences with those.

As far as media brand, I flop back and forth between Sony and Memorex.

You didn't ask, but I would also highly recommend that you establish a cataloging system...Again, if you're on a Mac, I think you'll love DiskTracker. It works very much like the Finder's "Find File" function.

The primary difference between DVD+RW and DVD-RW is the format (the difference between VHS and Beta, one tech advised). The two you mentioned are so similar, and do the same thing. It has been mentioned to me on more than one occasion that DVD+RW is used mainly for authoring and mastering (as in Videos, and are more expensive than the -RWs.

Hope this helps...

As far as the drives go the newer ones do both + and - as well can burn a CDR and CDRW. I would suggest getting some media singles and trying out the different formats to see which you prefer. The drives and well as DVD players can read either format. It use to be a big issue but I am not hearing complaints from customers anymore on which format works best. I still sell 20 CDRW's to every 1 DVDRW. It seems people still prefer to burn to CD at this point in time. The media is cheaper and more avaliable. Those buying DVDRW's are mostly after movies.

Okay, firstly, from a coupleof responses I've seen people should not confuse DVD-R as being equal to CD-R. CD-R was the label given for Compact Disc -Recordable. DVD-R is the format DVD MINUS R and not DVD - Recordable. There are DVD PLUS R and DVD MINUS R as formats as well as the whole RW versions that go along with them. The general concensus seem to be that the PLUS R is winning out over the MINUS R.

Things to keep in mind are, while most DVD drives will playback the discs, YOU NEED A DVD DRIVE!!!! So, don't go burning those 2.5 Gigs of photos onto one disc to give to your model, she might not be able to use it!!! Also, the drives will more than likely be able to burn CD's as well, so you shouldn't have to have two drives unless youw ant to extend the lives of both by only burning CDs on a CD burner and leaving the DVD burner for DVDs.

Keep that shutting clicking! Ciao!
