I have seen some really great posts about lighting lately and I wanted to post some questions. My main exposure has been to normal strobes with either a snoot, grid or softbox and natural light. Does anyone have experience with or know about some materials that talk about other lighting equipment and the best uses for that equipment. IE, the Kinoflos that I have seen messages about, Mola Beauty dishes, Fresnel Spotlights or other ones I have missed. Thanks.

Fresnels are pretty much the same as hot light fresnals. They have a focusing range, and they allow concentrating the light.

Another way to simulate that, with my lights, is to use a 3 deg. aperature disk with a deep grid spot, which properly placed, creates a spotlight effect that permits precise coverage of the facial plane on a subject.

I don't bother to use anything fancy. I just play around with cardboard, scisors and aluminum foil. Setting up Go Betweens or flags can help you as much as fancy fresnals. All I basically use are umbrellas, and grids. Then modify the light as it leaves the strobe.
