What is the major advantage of the IS as opposed to the non IS? I have read about the lens on various forums as well as this one, but what are user opinions pro and con? I will be using it primarily for glamour work and low light situations involving available light weddings. Opinions greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Luis

IS is definately for you if you do low light work. It'll give you up to 3 stops of extra room compared to non-IS handheld shooting. If you always shoot on a tripod, IS won't help you.

Its as sharp if not sharper than the non-IS model, has weather sealing and offers stunning bokeh. After taking a friend's lens for a test drive, I knew I had to have it.

Only downside is the price and weight.

Sounds like you'll be shooting hand-held. If so, go with the non-IS version as it is lighter. IS is good for shooting action from a tripod or monopod. Personally, though I find it a good and sharp lens I'm not wild about either of them. It's too heavy and unwieldy for me, but then I'm shooting fashion, so my experience isn't going to equate 100% to yours. I'd rather a couple of good primes (a fast 85, 100 macro, 135). And some people like that long end of it for glamour but I rarely use very long lengths like 180, 200, 300 or such. I don't like the excessive compression, it gives the same sort of perspective as a paparazzi shot...

Great lens!!!
Pros
Will give you the extra stops in low light.
color, contrast, clarity (sounds like a diamond) are incredible.
You can shoot at f2.8 all day if you want with incredible results and no degrading.

Cons
Heavy. Large and sometimes intimidating to be in front of.
I don't like the location of the AF/MF switch and IS switch I seem to turn them off with my fingers without noticing I do it. Could have a better location for those.

Overall
I think for 35mm portrait work, fashion, and glamour the quality of the images and the lens are the best. But I have to admit that after shooting for four hours my arms, shoulder and back are stiff.
