Models Prices

When you contract a model for doing a swimwear shoot what is a fair hourly price to pay her for her time?

eselby 02-04-2004 09:42 AM

Fair?

The fee you agree on is the "fair" fee.

Smart-assed answer? No, not really. So much has to be taken into consideration -- the model's look and experience, the photographer's talent, image use, client budget, etc., etc.

I see that you have worked with Ivy. Why don't you ask her? She should be able to give you a fair price.

Rates are negotiable. Unless this is for a bona fide commercial client, which will be published by the client, (I suspect it isn't), then you will probably need to keep it affordable.

Unless you absolutely need this particular model, and are willing to pay whatever she charges, you might find that a specific time frame, at a specific fee would be best, ratrher than hourly.

In that situation, $50-$100 might be more than an adequate range.

It all depends on the final use. If your just shooting for the fun of it you could probably find one for free or tfp. When I shoot models then is't usually just for fun or to try something new. I have paid models before but, if I'm paying them then they are going to be nude or very close to it. I don't consider myself a great photographer by any means but, new models or that pretty girl running the cash register at the store are generally pleased with what I give them. It's the ones that pay me that sometimes get %@#%ed off.

Re: Models Prices

The going rate for a swimwear model for a catalogue is usually about $150/hr. That said, your model's rate will vary based on lots of factors: her experience, where you are located (what city), how long the shoot will take (a full day can get you a discount, some models have a two-hour minimum), whether you are booking her through an agency (more expensive, more restrictions) or direct (you can negotiate a flat fee or other non-cash compensation), and most of all, the usage. If its for a national consumer cataloge, expect to pay more. If its for a national beer billboard campaign, expect to pay a lot more. If its just for your book, it could be no charge if all she wants are prints. If she wants money, you have to decide how much she is worth to you.
