I love these comparison questions. Unless people out there are working with EVERY peice of equipment they can get their hands on how are we to know if an S2 is better than a D100, or if Alien Bees are better than Dyna-Lytes.

Oh well, after shooting myself down, I'm gonna ask the comparison question anyways:

Pocket Wizards or FreeWires??

I've got Bees for strobes, and (2) Q Flashes at my disposal. My first thought is to go with the FreeWires as they're made by Quantum for better compatibility with the Q Flashes, but I suppose that doesn't really matter. I'm sure Pocket Wizards will work with the Q Flashes just fine.

I like the idea that the FreeWires can be transmitters AND recievers too. My good friend from NJ keeps telling me to get the Pocket Wizards as they can be used wirelessly with a particular Sekonic meter or two, but I don't plan on replacing my Minolta meter anytime soon.

So I look to you, all-knowing and omnipotent GG'ers, to help me solve this quandry. Even if you can't give me a comparison, let me know why you love your particular product anyway!

Thanks!
-Don

....every photographer shooting a digital camera should seriously consider using a wireless slave or wizard of some sort.
If you ever have a short or some other electrical problem when shooting, this can short out your camera, then you're really up #$%#@% creek. Happened to a friend of mine.

Don,

I have the PW+ and a few bees flying around. I love it, works well both inside and out. But I too have a Sekonic meter and a few receivers so I am knee deep in this. I also remote my cams for sporting events with PW too, I don't know if FW does that!

But that is me. What are your needs?

I think you have to look at interior/Exterior usage, buying another meter if you want. Distances and line of sight. I don't think there is one right answer (as usual) but your answer.

But also you have to look at third party support around cabling and such. PW is a much more popular product right now. Though I think places like Paramount Cable can make a cable for anything.

Was that vague enough for you!?!?!?

I bought a set of pocket wizards... wish I had bought the free wire instead.

The building I am in has 10 different studios... some days I can't find a free channel to use with my wizards, the quantum being less popular would have been better in my situation.

I have gone with the Pocket-Wizard solution for studio usage. Fortunately I donít have to contend with multiple users of radio channels in my location! When shooting with infrared triggers I have had more misfires because of line of site placement issues. The Canon 550EX series of flashes have infrared remote triggers and I generally wish that it was a radio device.

Most of the new equipment in my studio has PW sensors built-in (as well as infrared and slave modes) so for me PW is a no brainer.

I love the cordless stuff so much I am very seriously wishing I had enough money to put battery packs on all of my stands and run the lights without power packs.
