I'm debating whether or not I should dump the $80 for the latest Vuescan software or if I'd be ok using the current Nikon Scan Version 3.x software. I have used the Nikon Scan software for a couple years now but I never get good results from scanning. It could be operator error but I wonder if a different scanning engine like Vuescan would make a difference.

Has anyone used both and found one to be better than the other? I really want to get some quality slide scans from my Coolscan LS-2000 but it's just not happening. I am going digital next year but I still have thousands upon thousands of slides still waiting to be scanned for my stock photo business.

Your thoughts and insights would be most appreciated!

A very Merry Christmas to you all!

Mike

I use the Nikon software on my Coolscan III, and have friends who use Nikon's software with their LS-2000 machines - all with good results, so.... it might be operator error. The 3rd party software that most of the top people use is Silverfast AI, but it'll cost you $350. This link will take you to the big version (AI) but there is also a lite version for $50 if you click around the site. They make it for lots of scanners and cameras, but you need to buy a copy for every scanner or digital camera you want to use.

What about software for negatives?

I have tired the Nikon software, but wasn't too pleased. I have heard that Vuescan is better in this regard.

Hi Photo_guy. My LS-2000 does a wonderful job with negatives! It's only the slides that I seem to have trouble with. If money isn't a problem and you're looking for a good scanner for negatives, consider some of the new Nikon scanners or Canon scanners. I think Polaroid even had a nice one but I haven't been checking the market for scanners lately. The Digital ICE feature of the Coolscan scanners is a tremendous feature and I didn't find anything comparable in the Vuescan software that I tried the other day.

Merry Christmas!

Hi Andy,

I downloaded the Vuescan software and tried the program. It seems full of features and functionality but it didn't have the Digital ICE feature that I really like with my LS-2000. I was just hired to scan about 50 slides for a guy and I'm finding that the only way I am really getting relatively acceptable results is to scan them in at a file size of 50 MB and my resolution set to 2700 dpi. The down side to that is it takes so damn long for one single scan. It takes 15 minutes per slide and then more time to crop, balance, save, and burn to CD. My client only requires 16 MB file size but I can't seem to get the settings right to give me results I like and feel comfortable charging for. It just shouldn't be this complicated or maybe I'm just stupid where it concerns scanning. I just got Photoshop CS and maybe that will help me to produce a more refined finished product but I should be able to get stellar results from this scanner based upon the work I've seen others produce with it. I'm beginning to wonder if something is wrong with my scanner as well.

Thanks for the link, Andy. I'll check it out and see what gives. Also, thanks again for the autographed calendar! It's a HUGE hit!

I hope you are having a good holiday season and I wish the best for you in the New Year!!! Take care.
