Do you have pictures of the new Spyder? Colorvision's site only shows their older Spyder with three suction cups.

In any case, let's hope they've fixed their hardware and software quality control issues.

In general, I think most people are fine with the PhotoCal software. However, Optical is a bit better with color accuracy due to it having more options. They do have a comparison chart on the website you should check out to determine which is more appropriate for you.

when I called calumet yesterday, I asked what was the difference between the Spyder with PhotoCal for $119 and the Spyder with PhotoCal for $149 the salesman told me that the more expensive one was for new CRT/LCD sypder which has no suction cups.

Get A LaCie CRT monitor and their cal tool instead of spyder. the lacie cal tool has electronics built in to the monitor for the cal tool.

I think the optical is ALOT better. As for if the clients will know the difference i think it depends on the client. As someone else mentioned the optical sets the brigthness and contrast off readings from the spyder versus requiring you to do it visually. It's not alot more money for the optical, I would get that. I'm not sure if they're still running hte promotion or not but I got a $70 rebate on the spyder optical bundle. The end cost was about $160.

This is a question many times asked, also on FMs board.

Many people claim the Optical is better, because the spyder measures the white and blackpoint. BUT, it is only useful if you know the exact values for your monitor (do you know them?). The default settings are not recommended for your setup.

IMO The photocal is good enough; the spyder is exact the same. If you have an exact method to know the brightness and contrast values, please explain your method. In the meantime, the optical has some advantages, but will not lead to a better-calibrated monitor on a single monitor setup.
