I looked at home depot, walmart, target, etc. Nobody has them because it's winter I guess. I found one cheesey plastic but I wanted a heavy duty one with mainly metal construction, something that will tolerate abuse, being thrown in the trunk, etc. I have been having my models just toss their head to get the hair blowing around effect but it's tough to get the shot perfectly in focus this way. Anyone have any ideas?

What you REALLY want is a wind machine. Its different from a regular box fan in two ways. First, it pushes a lot more air through, so you can use it from farther away from the model (otherwise box fans end up being in the shot if its full length). Second, the wind is more focused, so its not blowing (wasting) wind all over the place. Most the fans I've seen in studios are longer and about a foot in diameter - kind of like a small thick cannon. Bowen makes a good one, you should check with any pro-oriented photo supply to buy one, but they're not cheap. They usually run $25-35/day just to rent. Otherwise you'll have to wait for summer I guess. (Not me though - it was 78 degress here in LA today!)

If they cost that much jsut to rent I definitely do NOT want one

Someone had a nice fan in their studio that did the trick (I forget who), it was basically just a nice heavy duty fan with a metal safety grate on it and a nice metal stand all integrated that would sit on the floor and allow you to angle it any way you want. THat's what I'm looking for. Guess I'm SOL.

I haven't used in a shoot (yet) but I got an 18" HV fan from Harbor Freight tools that moves a LOT of air; it's designed for ventilation, not cooling.

Well the idea is to find a fan that moves a lot of air, one way or another, and ideally lets you aim it so it isn't blowing all over the place. I've seen some at home depot or Costo that look like they'd fit the bill. Good luck.

I cheated and went to Sears. Which was a bit of an aggravation, but if you need the fan, it may well be worth it. I had at first gone to the store but was told they weren't in stock during the winter. So I went online and saw on their site that it was indeed in stock. So I ordered it to be picked up, went back to the same store, same salesperson and after waiting 15 minutes out he came with my fan. Funny, it seems the personel had no clue and just needed to look in the back

P.S...I got the cheap plastic one, it's been thrown around some(even left in the rain ) and still works. It's fairly focused and blows plenty of air....kinda like me
