I wonder if the 12" model might not be better? Seems like it might be a little more focused and since it looks like an industrial fan the 18 might be overkill?

Only $25 - what a bargain!

Have you seen those inflatable bouncy thingies that kids play in at carnivals? They have high output fans that keep them inflated. Now, those may be too big, but there are also smaller inflatable structures with smaller fans. You could use one of those.

I did a google for inflatables (man, they have inflatable technology in architecture and space exploration!), and didn't find a supplier of just the fans, but I'll bet that if you are diligent you can find one.

Figuring you are looking for inexpensive that will "do", vs. the pro fans used by fashion shooters, your best bet at this time of year is Sears or Penny catalog service. (Not the stores.)

The best kind of cheaper fan, is one on an adjustable stand, with variable speed control. They run about $70. as I recall.

What do the things the pros use cost?

I'm sure I can't afford one!

Being a bit on the cheap side, I prefer to save my pennies whenever I can. I would far prefer spending 70 bucks over 1300, so try this litle trick. Get a less expensive fan with a stand, one which has a decent output. Then pick up some posterboard, or most anything else which is flexible and bend it into a cone shape around the fan. By restricting the airflow into a smaller space, it should be stronger nd more directional. Use gaffer's tape (a lot of it!) to attach the cone to the fan. I may not look pretty, but it'll work.

If you really want one that is powerful and will last I would sugget getting a Bowens Fan. It is compact can be easily mounted on a Matthews or studio stand and very directional.

The downfall is that it is expensive. About $900 depending on where you get it from. But you never have to buy a fan again.
