Just got my first digital Camera.
NIKON COOLPIX 5700.
Scares me to death !
It has so many buttons...
and I have such a small mind.
Help me out, tell me what you know.

Well Dan,

Location is going to kick you in the behind on this one. But Unique Photo is running a Nikon Coolpix class in January

If you have something specific you would like to know feel free and ask. I personally love (however can not afford) the 5700. Optical Zoom on that thing is amazing.

Thanks for the reply Jason.
I will catch on to the menus and icons...I'm just a little slow.
However I do have a question you may be able to answer. I want
to use it with studio strobes. I have an adapter for the hot shoe
that will allow me to plug up to the strobes. My guess is shoot
on manual. Use a shutter speed of 1/60. Get an exposure reading from my
Minolta spot meter and take a manual white balance reading.
Does that sound like a plan ????

A web site called Newegg.com has a good sale on the 5700 now,
with $100 rebate and free shipping.
I did purchase an extra battery and an extra 512 meg memory card for it.
I'm glad I got the 512 card because it only came with a 16 meg card.
16 Meg is only 1 image on tiff or raw settings.

Looking forward to some input on the strobe situation.
Thanks again,
Tom Snyder

Sounds like a good idea. Honestly the sync speed is hard to find on the 5700 but I imagine it is in the realm of 1/60 - 1/125th, best bet is most likely the 1/60th like you said. Meter and adjust on manual and play with the results. Sadly megapixels go up on a lot of cameras but the memory cards they give stay the same However, I think Nikon was giving 32mb cards out and not 16... might wanna double check with the people you got the camera from... Mute point of course with the 512 you got now, but keeps people in the industry honest

Best of luck in the world of digital.

I have had the 5700 now for a year. It does everything I need. Get a Nikon SB30 flash and a Wein SSL slave unit. There is no minimum sync speed...a big benefit over the new SLR digicams! Back to the strobe, the SB30 has a cover to put over the flash head that allows only the IR light out and the Wein sees it and fires any flash equipment you hook onto it. The real benefit, no cords, just the flash unit on the camera. Set the camera in either shutter or aperture priority and use your flash meter.

BTW, always use a tripod with that long lens if you use slow exposures.

No worry either of dust entering the sensors inside! Costco has 256MB CompactFlash for about $50...don't get the Microdrive.
