Hi all,

This horse has probably already been beaten to death but as I have been walking the town cleaning out garbage cans in order to save up for a 10D, I've been contemplating my lens selection. Yes, I know about the excellence of the name-brand lenses (like I use with my F100) but I also use Sigma professional lenses. I have been looking at the Tamron lenses lately but don't know how they compare with Sigma. They do seem to have a much smaller footprint for the same focal length but what about quality? My Sigma lenses have been absolutely outstanding and I have no problem buying more but I'm also looking at size as a factor. Since I'm selling all of my Nikon equipment and going with Canon, I'm just curious about which lens manufacturer to go with. My preference is genuine Canon lenses but until I can afford them, I'm having to opt for Sigma or Tamron. Any thoughts?

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Mike

Don't have any wisdom to offer, may be interested in something you're selling. Lenses? Flash?

No comparison. Canon. Ooops, sorry, wasn't one of the choices. But, look in mags, Canon has discontinued the 28-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 and they can be had fairly cheap (I've seen the 70-200 as low as $850), I've also seen the 17-40 4.0 as low as $600.

my main lens is the Tamron 28-105 2.8 ....I figure if David Mecey was willing to give up his Nikon glass it must be a decent lens ... I also have sigma 20-40 2.8 and the older quantary/ sigma 70-210 2.8 ...

1st off, try not to buy into this "the camera maker's lenses are the only ones worth buying" nonsense. Look at your needs, then research it.

I too recently made the switch from Nikon-based (Fuji S2) to Canon (EOS 1D). I tried Canon's 70-200 f4 L lens for a week and didn't care for it. So I've switched to Sigma's 70-200 f2.8.

So now I've got all 3rd party lenses:

Quantaray (Tokina) 19-35 f3.5-4.5 - called the Plastic Fantastic on DPReview
Tamron 28-75 f2.8 XR Di - see recent tests by Shutterbug and PopPhoto
Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX APO - considered (by some) to be the equal of Canon's L glass

I would recommend any of these to a serious photographer. But one thing's for sure....you've GOT to cherry pick the lenses from the 3rd party guys to find the best designs. They've each got a coupla primo lenses, and a lot of dreck. YMMV....

Hi George,

Well, I have a Nikon F100 for sale. I also have a gorgeous Sigma for Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 EX APO lens and a similarly gorgeous Metz 54-MZ3 flash to go with the camera (or any other Nikon camera that is compatible with it). I must say that this Sigma lens (I sold my other one...a 24-80mm f2.8) has been wonderful! It's probably the finest piece of glass I've ever used to date.

If interested in any of these, feel free to send me a private message and we can talk turkey (no pun intended given our current holiday).

Good day sir!

Mike

Hi David,

I have the 70-200mm f2.8 EX APO Sigma and it has been the best piece of glass I've ever shot with, including my Nikkor lenses. I would not hesitate for a second to buy another one; that much is certain. More of a consideration now is just the size. The Sigma 70-200mm is a big lens. It's impressive to others who see me shooting with it (no, it's not compensation for other Freudian-type, um, shortcomings...) but if I can cut the size in half using an equal quality Tamron, it would give me room for another lens in my already overstuffed bag.

Thanks for your input! Always great to have lots of input!

Good day and Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Eric,

Do you know why they discontinued these lenses? Those two focal lengths seem to be the workhorse range for most work. I'm guessing they probably just changed the focal length a bit (like changing the 70-200 to an 80-200) but I don't know. I'll definitely have to check for some "hot" bargains on the discontinued lenses.

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Jayson,

I've noticed some pretty heavy advertisements lately about the quality of Tamron and I know about David Mecey. Choices like that aren't come to in a moments notice. It would take some serious thought and good experiences with other equipment to cause someone to switch brands. That carries a lot of weight with me.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Have a great Thanksgiving!

If David Mecey switched to Tamron/Sigma, it's only because they paid him 6 figures to do it. There *is* a dufference in the quality of the glass from Nikon/Canon vs the "others". Look on the used market and get a real lens, from Nikon/Canon. They are always there...they maintain their value...and they are flat out better peices of glass than the other stuff.
