The 28-70 was discontinued for the 24-70 and the 70-200 is now the 70-200 IS (image stabilized). They are both still excellent lenses.

Got the tamron 28-75 2.8 ASP DI lens, love it. Going to prolly invest in some more tamron glass, some of my friends who work for the star ledger here in the Newark area love em as well

Great results, love it. Little over $300 for 2.8 glass ya can't go wrong

Let the numbers speak for themselves....

Here's the links to Popular photography's tests of each lens.

At almost dollar for dollar, the Tamron shows a considerable difference in quality over the Sigma, and the Canon does show a difference in optical quality over Tamron, but not by much. (However, I'm sure there's a considerable difference in build quality) But at almost 3 times the cost of the Tamron, is it really worth it? I myself didn't think so and took the $800 difference and invested in some lighting equipment

Tamron announced a Di version of a 70-200 f2.8 design way back when. It is not out yet however. But, if the 28-75 is any indicator, it should be smaller and lighter than the other 2.8s on the market today. Perhaps wait?

After you get your 10D(which I shoot with). Save up for Canon L series glass. The 28mm to 70mm is rated with the best. (better than most) Heres a website that rates all lens and cameras which might help you decide.A great place to by used lenses is www.KEH.com.html Ive bought several high dollar items from them and its always been beter than they rated it. tommymc

If you're a Canon user, the main reason to use Canon-branded lenses is their lenses allow you to override the autofocusing at any time (no more fiddling with switches). Sigma now offers a similar feature in their high-end lenses such as their 70-200/2.8, but Tamron doesn't.

Put it to you this way. Would you save a few dollars on a lens of less quality on something as important as possibly the best pitcher of your life's work. Buy the best glass you can.

True, which in this case was a question on either the Tamron or Sigma. (Canon wasn't even mentioned) At that price range the Tamron is the sharper and clearer lens. It scored 1 10th of 1 percent lower than Canon lens, (Based on Popular Photographys testing system of a picture shot at f8 with each lenses at their fullest zoom)The Tamron was considerably higher than the Sigma. So, by the numbers, this would seem to be the best lens for the money.

Wow! I'm really greatful for the wonderful outpouring of information and comments. In my original post I neglected to throw Canon glass into the mix but only because of the cost issue. I know from experience with my Nikon equipment that Nikkor lenses are much more expensive than the Tamron and Sigma counterparts. I have both Nikkor and Sigma and don't have any complaints about either one. The Sigma glass has been terrific! I guess I would have to say that I am partial to buying name-brand lenses and would love to have Canon glass but it's amazing at how quickly economics can shoot down the best laid plans of mice and photographers (at least those like me who have no money). For that reason, I will probably opt for the Tamron because they are smaller and from what I've read from links given in this thread, they are excellent lenses. I had a Tamron once but it wasn't of "professional" quality and I think it really sucked. It was that experience that made me not use Tamron any more. With the new professional glass offered by Tamron perhaps I should reconsider.

Again, thank you all for your thoughts, links, insights, and advice. They are all much appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mike
