I have dust spots all over my images, and can't seem to get rid of them. This is especially annoying with subjects on white backgrounds. Short of sending the camera in to be cleaned, has anyone found a way to do this without screwing something up?

I had the same problem with my 10D. I didn't want to screw anything up either so I took it to my local camera dealer and had them check it out. They cleaned the sensor for me which seemed to do the trick.

Depending on how bad they are there is always the healing brush in PhotoShop which works well in these situations, but I know where you are coming from. It gets to be quite annoying

My best advise, let the professionals take care of it. Too many things you could mess up doing it yourself. Oh and also, are you 100% confident it's not your lense?

I'm from a crappy little town that doesn't have squat as far as camera dealers go. To give you an idea, Wolf's can't even stay in business here. SO, taking it to my "local" dealer is at least an hour long trip to KC.

I've cleaned my lenses up, down and inside out and still get crap on my high key images. Here is an example: Of course, at high res it's easy to see BILLIONS of spots that take HOURS to clean. I wish there was an easy way...

Hi Barb,

I think the solution to your problem is quite simple. You need to send me the camera as a charitable contribution to write off on your taxes and then go buy yourself a Canon 1Ds. I'd be more than happy to give you a receipt for said item at a price higher than current market value! Now, after parting with the errant D1x I'm sure you'll feel so much better.

Good day!

Mike

Barb
I have a D1X also but my specs do not show up as black spots just darker than surrounding specs. Unfortunately I have one body and cannot afford 5 -7 days for my local shop to clean it. So I checked around and found a product that I think works well but I was skiddish using it. Before trying put the camera into clean CCD mode. Hold it upside down and using air from a bulb blower not canned air blown it out good. Have it over some white paper so you can see the crap that falls out. Then use this product very carefully. If you are myopic then use a lighted magnifying glass so you can get a sense of where you are. If the specs are consistently in the same spot then you should be able to locate the area quickly.

Sensor Swabs

They were recommended off of Moose Peterson's Nikon Digital site. I was leery before I used them but I have been happy with the results.

By the way I love your work and I love having a woman professional photographer on this forum. It is not only refreshing you are enlightening with your needed viewpoint.

Barb,

How are you changing your lenses?? My D-100 manual says to hold your camera lens mount opening facing down when you change. Maybe this will help in the future if you arent already doing it.

Another reason for having a zoom=fewer lens changes.

Hope this helps

My 10D has a sensor cleaning mode which from my understanding causes the CCD to vibrate and literally shake dust off. Does the D1x have something like that?

Hi Mike,

Hey thanks for the helpful info! I don't have an adapter to turn the CCD cleaning on. I don't think I do anyway unless it came with the camera and has been hidden away with all the boxes. The manual says to not wipe it clean under any circumstances, but I'm willing to do it if I could get the mirror up. I can't afford to give up my camera for a week either, like you. Still working on figuring out how to get it cleaned. Planning to turn my camera upside down and see what falls out.

And thanks for the nice compliments. You're very kind. Hugshugs!

Hi Stu,

Thanks for your input. I do change lenses with the camera facing the ground, and I change lenses very little at that. I stick mostly with my zoom.
