anyone have any experience shooting long exposures (1 min and longer) with their digital slr? how's the noise? how long into the exposure before the image quality starts to suffer? i'm kidnapping a friend's 10D this weekend and was thinking of doing night stuff. i'd like to shoot at 100 ISO (or with digital should i rate it higher?).

thanks,

sean

Digital seems to have a great deal of sensiotivity toward long exposures versus "artifacting". The Epson course I took goes over how to remove them and I will review those notes to get back to you. I believe you need to make sure your iso settings are appropriately balanced to your exposure setting. I'm sure you can find a decent combination. The 10D I used seemed light years better than my Olympus.

Use a combo of film speed and shutter speed that is compatible with F/8 for best results. (Night shots are best done with nocturnal lenses, or at F/8 on standard lenses.)

Be aware that movement of camera and/or subject, is more obvious on digital, than film, from my experience. Use a good tripod, with a cable release being essential, and try to avoid any vibration.

I'm not sure about longer than 30 seconds, but below are some downsampled images from my 10D that were 30 seconds. I only had to clean up a couple of artifacts in both images. The bulk of the exposure is from two strobes; the long exposure was used so I could fill in some darker areas with the modeling light and add a touch of blue from another light source.

Here is a shot I took last year, it was shot at just around a minute. I shot it at F11 one winter foggy night.

The original picture had tons of noise spots on it, I shoot an S2, but 20 minutes of clean up and it was good to go.

I just had this printed at a 16x20 and it looks great!!!!

hope this helps,

regards,

david
