Sorry, if this appears to be the same old “What tripod should I buy?” post but I assure it is not.

I’m sure the Gitzo Carbon Fiber is awesome, but since I am NOT going to be buying one, no need reminding me. Now, I saw that many, many people here have tripod/head set-ups that easily fit into the $600-$100 range, but my last name does not end in “Rockefeller”.

Any tripod I own would be used less than 10% of the time, so I have established an approximate ceiling of $400 for both a Tripod and Ball head.

I am leaning towards a set-up consisting of the Bogen 3221WN ($150) and an Acratech head ($230).

I would love to hear from anyone who has had any experience with these items or from people who can recommend a tripod in the $140--$170 range or a Ball-Head in the $100--$230 range.

Thanks….

I don't know what kind of camera you have or how heavy duty of a tripod you reccomend but I highly highly reccomend this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=284782&is=REG

Well below your budget. Some people hate the "grip action" ball head but I love it. I don't own but a friend of mine does, very well made and as I said i just really the convenience the grip head offers.

At the risk of being premsumptious, I would like to offer the following. I have a number of Bogen Tripods as well as a number of Bogen Heads. My collection came from two positions; one, never want to carry one with me when I traveled, but wanting one once I arrived and two, an expense account that was to say the least excessive. The long and short of this is, I have a number that have seen about zero usage and are sitting around.

If you are interested drop me a note and I will send you a list of what I have.

Regards,
Tim Neumann

The Bogen 3221-series tripod works well for the price.

Another quality ballhead that's within your budget is the Kirk BH-3 ballhead. As for the plates, L-plates are pricy but worth it if you shoot a lot of verticals, and works much better than the generic plate included with the BH-3. Keep in mind that they are made to order...

I went out to two Camera stores at lunch and have switched to the Bogen 3021BPRO, it is actually cheaper, lighter, more versatile and has Flip Locks which I really want.

I saw a Acratech Head and it is really awesome, I have heard lots of good reviews of the Kirk BH-3 and may go with it as it is about $60 less than the Acratech, I just wish I could see one...

My Kirk BH-3 should be arriving in a few days...

If you're interested in one, there are a couple of them on eBay right now, as the wait time to receive one from Kirk is three weeks.

Apparently the ballheads are made to order (since they really don't sell a lot of these).

My experience with ordering the Arca-Swiss B1 ballhead are interesting in itself. (Note: this is the best ballhead you can buy, and the agony of spending $500 for the ballhead and quick release plates is gone once you start using it). These things are never in stock, and you never know when the store's going to receive their next shipment from Arca-Swiss.

Like BMWs, these ballheads have really good resale value. I sold my two-year-old well-used Arca-Swiss B1 for roughly the same price I paid for it.
