i am looking for a camera to move into digital photography and build a system. Use will be for development of stock portfolio as well as assignments. The Sigma is cheaper and gets a great review at DPreview, but of course doesn't have the name of the others. What would people recommend?
Thanks!

Go with the Canon...I have used the D100 for about a year and found it lacking from a personal viewpoint.

If you want to be leading edge.....

I like the idea that the sensor is 4:3 ratio rather then 3:2. Think 645 vs 35mm.

The Canon 10D is the best choice. The lenes focus faster than the Nikon. I have used both. Get the aditional battery hand grip attachment .... BG-ED3 Battery Grip. You will not have to change batterys all day.

I used a 10D on this photo.

Thanks for the replies. The Canon seems to have the edge, esp. since I dont see an advantage to a 4x3 aspect ratio over 3x2. But I'm still intrigued by the resolution of the Sigma Foveon chip. Each pixel records all three colors, so each does the work of three pixels on any of the other cameras, right? Has anyone worked with this camera?

The problem with the E1 is that is has to have lenses that take advantage of the new aspect ratio. It only has four lenses available and if the idea doesn't catch on with other lens manufacturers, this model will go the way of the dinosaurs. At this point I'm not willing to take that chance. The idea is good and it looks like a worthy camera but I'm too gun-shy to want to try it. Plus it has so few items available for it as well.

Good day!

Well, an argument can be made for all of the cameras you mentioned. I myself shoot with an S2, for at the time I was getting the most of what I needed out of my digital camera with that model. Now of course there are things like the 10D and SD9s etc.

I would say if you have no lenses and arn't sure what you wanna do in the long run go Canon to start. Great things at great prices.

this much i am certain, you can buy all of these cameras at Unique Photo Inc. so just drop me a line (jasone@uniquephoto.com or call 1-800-631-0300 ext 292) and I can give you a quote on some digital cameras. For what its worth, currently we are offering the D100 with an EXTRA battery, and we all know what those Nikon batteries go for now a days.

According to a very experienced digital shooter friend, the Sigma has problems mostly with noise and shadows. He would say go for the Canon 10D, unless, like me, you already have Nikon glass, in which case he suggests (and uses) the Fuji S2, which is where I think I'm headed.

Besides, renting or buying used lenses and such will be easier with the Nikon or Canon mounts than Sigmas.

The Sigma also has problems with highlights. The specular highlights or overexposed areas may turn solid white, which looks really unnatural. The review on DPReview discusses the pros and cons of this camera in detail.

The first digital camera I had years ago an Olympus 2100 did that. I hated that camera.

I stayed with 35mm until the new Canon's came out.

Now I use both 35mm and digital.

My Canon 1Ds and 10D never do that.
