Is there a technical wizard out there? This is driving me bonkers!

About 2/3 of the time, I can't see the Main forum, and about 1/3 of the time I can't see the Tech forum. I get a blank white IE frame with a "DONE" status at the bottom. I was thinking something was amiss at my ISP and plugged in my laptop to verify. Whoa, everything works fine on the laptop running off the same cable connection -- same router alongside my cable modem.

But, both machines are running XP Pro, latest updates. One clue -- the view source function on the working machine shows the long and complex GG source code -- hello hackman! -- but the source on the erring box shows only these very few lines...

**!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 **Transitional//EN">
**HTML>
****** http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
**BODY>
Search Engine Friendly URLs by vBSEO 3.2.0

--above html mutilated to keep the GG forum machine happy

So, why does the desktop usually get a trivial source for the GG forum, while the laptop -- so far -- gets the real thing???

All ideas welcome! Thanks, Help!

My best guess is that one machine has a slightly different version of Explorer and is choking on the site code for some reason.

sounds really possible. But both browsers are at the same level -- 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633. However, they do have different update (Q-number) histories. Hmmmm. Thanks for the idea...

May want to make sure you have the latest version of Java on the laptop.

MickySoft came up short on Java in XP due to the loss of the battle in court with Sun.

Mike,

Interesting idea, thanks. I went ahead and loaded almost all of the obscure non-critical Windows Update elements that's I'd passed over, but with no effect. As for putting a newer Java on the box, I assume that would have to come in through the Windows Update mechanism, too, unless there's a method I don't know about. By the way, it's the minitower that won't see the Main forum, the laptop is fine -- and just when I thought laptops were the source of all problems, lol,

Lynn,

Java for Windows can be downloaded at www.java.com

Here is what I ran into on it....

With XP when I ran it as an upgrade from '98 the box already had Java on it because MS had been able to package it.

When I installed XP on an empty drive as a clean install... no Java. It is't packaged with the O.S.

Anyway, it was the problem I was having and installing Java from Sun took care of it. I hope it is something as simple as that for you and you get it fixed.

Mike,

That sounded exactly right, especially since the XP-Pro that often isn't able to see the Main forum was a fresh install, and the XP-Pro on my laptop was an upgrade from W2K.

So I went to java.com, downloaded the software, rebooted, eagerly went to the GG Main Forum -- and got the same empty white frame. Anyhow, thanks for the suggestion!

The inimitable KurtG has helped me discover that deleting the GG cookie from the machine restores visibility to the forum, I can read all the content as a guest.

But then when I want to post something, and login, the forum content vanishes immediately. Back to a blank frame. Until I delete the cookie, which has the effect of logging me off. What does this mean? There's arsenic in the cookie, lol?
