Get a prime 100mm - 200mm lens depending on your personal preference for DOF and compression. If you have the cash, get an L Series lens for even better clarity. That's about all I can say about that.

As a Fuji (Nikon) user myself, all I will say is get something between 85 and 110 mm, yes Prime it has to be.

This one was taken with a Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro lens, costing about $400 I think. When it arrived, I was shocked, I was expecting a nice big lens, I got a little thing, but it works wonders, well worth having.

thanks for the info,
i swapped some nikon gear for a canon 50mm f/1.4 which with the 1.6 factor gives me a 80mm.

i had also been looking at the 100mm canon macro.
regards,
mikey...............

you have to remember that that 50mm doesn't give you the perspective of a 80 just because it is on a digital body.
your boken might be close, but not exactly like a 80.
and I am suspecting that the reason you want a portrait lens is for the boken.

Once you put an 85mm on your body, you will never take it off.

I second that, I find it a great lens to work with, and its also nice and light,

Its pinpoint sharp also.

Since mine is a macro I also get some nice closeup shots.

I shoot only Canon Digital these days any more. If you want a quality lens the (L) series is the only choice. I have a 28-70 2.8 L which I use all the time and the 70-200 2.8 L when I want to get back. These lens are rated about as high as any other quality lens on the market. You will be able to tell the difference with a good piece of glass. I think its more important than the camera body. I found a great source at KEH.com . Ive bought lots of things from them and always better than quoted. tommymc

On a 10d, the 85 mm you suggest would be a about a 135mm. Isn't that a bit long for a strictly portrait lens?
Cheers,
rfs
