Two ways to look at it. Most of the camera companies of the world will tell you 2 megapixels are good enough for an 8 x 10. But myself and other photographers will prolly tell you 3 megapixels.

A minimum of 3 mp if you are printing the full image. If you do any cropping though, you better get at least 4.

How big can we go with 5.5 MP or 6 MP [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img], without losing quality??

Also, do these programs out there ( Genuine Fractionals, etc. ) really help you go bigger?

Some photographers I know seem to get much better results going bigger than I do.

I've done 8x10s with my 2.1mp PowerShot S100 and it looks good to the untrained eye (printed on epson 1270) and to me if I am permanently looking at it framed from at least 2 feet away. It can be decent, depending on your audience.
