I've been building some jpeg's in Photoshop-6, they're 600 pixels on a side and I'm keepiing them under 50K. Of course, you generally have to go to lesser image quality to get the file size smaller.

But a couple of images today have actually created larger file sizes with lower quality jpegs. Like a 9-quality at 78K, an 8-quality at 63K, 7-quality at 49K, 6-quality at 50K... Whoa! -- the quality dropped but the file size grew? Happened with a few different images, so I rebooted, brushed my teeth, etc., but it's consistent. Anyone else ever seen this behavior and do you know what's happening there?

Thanks, Lynn

the math behind the jpg compression is telling you that it can no longer EFFICIENTLY compress the files.

You know how when u go on vacation and you can't get all your clothes back in the suitcase at the end of the vacation?

Same thing here...the jpeg is not compressing well as you continue to lower the quality. If you initially saved it as a 6, the size would be smaller, but going down in steps is not efficient...

Thanks for the reply, Delane. The numbers actually continue as expected after the hiccup at the "6" step, the sequence is 78M, 63M, 49M, 50M, 41M, 36M, 31M...

I always thought the reason for that was because you bought more clothes!

Lynn,

If you know this forgive me, the last thing I want to do is teach someone how to suck eggs,

If your saving your pictures for the web (any digital viewing really) then you should not be using save as jpg and setting a quality.

You should use the save for web option, then in quality box start off at about 70, if you then click another box, you can see the file size at the bottom saving at this size will return.....

hope this helps..

David
