If you used the Canon 1v for film and a 10D/1Ds for digital - what would you suggest is the most compatible quality Canon soft focus lens?

Thanks Jayson, that is an interesting idea worth looking into.

In terms of the soft focus lens itself - anyone know the one to use with Canon 1v and 10d or 1Ds?

Is there even such thing as a soft focus lens?

The soft focus effect is achieved with filters -- I've never seen a "soft focus" lens. If I did, I'd consider the lens defective.

The black scarf trick works as does a softening filter.

The only Canon EOS soft focus lens that I know of is the 135/2.8SF. It's a non-USM lens with 2 levels of softness. From the bits and pieces of info I have read, the soft focus only works at the larger apertures.

This lens should work fine with any EOS body (film or digital). The only thing that I know you should be aware of is the 1.6 cropping factor of the 10D vs. the full-framed film bodies.

No. I do not own this lens.

Thanks DKsun, that is useful info.

The 1.6 cropping factor of the 10D vs. the full-framed film bodies, is something that really worries me and another reason why I'm desperate to find a good deal on the 1Ds as soon as possible.

If anyone can help with that I would be extremely grateful.

For anyone else in my situation, be damn careful on Ebay - I have weeded out over 90 fraudulent scam artists so far "selling" this camera. Some obvious, some less so. How many of them are the same person I don't know!

I thought the same thing, but had read about lenses that have that function. I hope it is very versatile though otherwise it may not be a sound investment!

Can't help on the 1Ds. I'm getting by with the 10D until there is a digital version of the EOS-3. I really miss the eye controlled focus...

FWIW- With my film body (EOS-3), my main lens is the 70-200/2.8. The 10D usually has a 28-70/2.8 on it. For the occasional wide angle, I have a Sigma 15-30 which gets wide enough on the 10D for my purposes.

Instead of the 135mm soft focus, how about getting a 100mm Macro USM along with a Softar? It's a good, sharp lens. A 100mm with the 1.6 multiplier, you end up with 160mm...pretty close to the 135.

Image below was shot with the 28-70...with a bit of post-click soft focus:
