I know this may be pretty basic, but what type of filter would you use to get that "David Hamilton" effect? I was told it was a fog filter in conjunction with a warming filter, but it didn't sound right. Does anybody know for sure?

That's exactly right....you may have to experiment a little to get the effect that you want.

I used to use a Nikon A12 warming filter with a soft focus filter....the warming filter gave the photos kind of a "tobacco" colored cast.

A word of caution...I had better results when using this combo with transparency film rather than color negative. I've never tried it with digital.

hi
if you look at David Hamilton, he use several filers like cokin defused 1,pastel 1 ect but mostly he use Vaseline if you look at his pictures most if not all has slight difference in softness. most of the time his use of Vaseline with warming filter showcase. remember he expert with how much Vaseline to use in each shoot.

David created much of his work like many photographers do.....experimentation. There is no one way to get a specific effect that works all the time.

You can, however, approximate his effect with a B+W fog filter. Remember not to have people looking at the camera, when you use that.

To paraphrase another photographer, who summed it up pretty well, soft focus required two years of heavy experimentation, to begin to understand how to make it work best, under varying conditions.

Rick, why do we need to remember to have the subject NOT look at the camera?

There still are ways to create without Photoshop, you know.

Fog filter effects, would be very difficult to do with Photoshop, I would think. Someone might prove me wrong, who is better at Photoshop than I......but for now, I think the filter is the way to go for that effect.

Not into photo posting, so no, nothing with that available to show. All the images I have on line are here, or on GP, in the portfolios.
