I managed to hornswoggle the boss into letting me buy a Stylus Photo 2200. It got here the other day and I'm having a problem with it. It insists that it can't recognize the Photo Black cartridge. I'm using the cartridges that came in the box.

I took it out and swabbed the contacts with alcohol, and it worked for a bit and then it stopped again. Epson wants me to go buy another black cartridge and see if that fixes it. If it does, they say, they'll send me a free black cartridge to replace the bad one. If not, they say they'll swap the printer.

Going to get a new cartridge is a hassle but not a bad one. I really don't want to wait, though, for a new one if it turns out the problem is not the cartridge. Anybody out there had this problem with a 2200 and know a simple fix?

Other than this I'm really happy with the printer: I paid $550 for it, which wasn't bad, and the prints I have gotten were really nice. So I'm definitely going to have a 2200, the question is only whether I'm going to have *this* 2200.

First off I love my 2200. What you may be seeing is a problem that comes from trying to use "Photo Black" with a paper that it is better to use "Matte Black". If you know your paper is compatible with "Photo Black" then I am not sure what your problem may be. but I have heard that Epson is currently under fire for cartridge chips that cause problems. I'd contact epson through their website.

Good thinking, but that's not it. This happens before any paper is loaded or any print settings are entered into the computer. I did get it to work for a while this afternoon, and I was using a matte black cartridge with plain paper. It warned me that this was not a good combination but allowed me to override it.

I got tired of fooling with it and called Epson again... they are drop shipping me a new printer Second-Day air, free. They did put a hold on my credit card until they get the other one back (in the box the new one came in, includes a paid shipping return label.) That's reasonable, this is not a cheap piece of equipment. I've been very pleased with Epson's customer service - I've bought four scanners and two printers direct from them in the last year or so and they've been very good. (One of the scanners arrived damaged: they did the drop ship deal with that one, too.)
