Do any of you guys have it? What do you think about it?

It claims a 10 megapixel effective resolution because it has 3 3.x megapixel sensors that handle red green and blue idependently. I'm curious if anyone's used it and what there results are and if you agree that theoretically it should be equivalent to a 10 megapixel single sensor digital?

Brian

I just taught a class on the latest updates in digital photography. I was checking out the Foveon (that's the SD9's chip) and while it sounds great -- there's some concern about the crispness of the images that you get with the chip. One question everyone always asks is "If it's so great how come only SIGMA is using it?" I heard a rumor that Hassleblad was looking into it. However, when the H1 came out -- it uses the Kodak digital back!

That leads to another comment on the Sigma -- the lenses. As my good friend Jerry Brown always says "The latest camera body is only a place to hang your glass -- look at the system, not the camera." Pretty smart advice. I'm thinking that the Sigma system isn't really cooked yet -- some things are OK, but it doesn't seem complete. At this point do you want to commit to this system? Wait until you can see where they're going and decide to jump on.

Heck, if you're interested in futures -- check out the Olympus-led FourThirds initiative. A single standard for digital cameras that will make bodies and lenses from several manufacturers (right now Olympus, Kodak and Fuji) interchangable. Cool idea. However, Kodak and Fuji don't make lenses.... etc.

Bottom line -- look for a camera system that will grow with you and decide what order you want to acquire the parts for that system. I was even thinking the other day that I might want to invest in a new FILM body (with two digitals in my case) because I have clients (including myself) that need 35mm slides. I was estimating how long the demand would last and would it be worth it to buy something. Currently I have one N70 left and it's producing the work I need -- so for now I'm not investing.

Was that more answer than your question needed!

The rumor I heard re; why only Sigma is using the Foveon chip, is that Sigma has a one year exclusive contract with Foveon in exchange for, I'm guessing extra R'n'D money.
*shrug*
Remember, I did say rumor!
