Anyone have Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX?

It's a cheap printer and I wonder if any of you guys even bother printing your stuff on something like that but if so maybe someone can answer a few questions for me...

When you select the printer preferences ot print a color page you have a number of options under mode: automatic, custom, or photoenhance. YOu can also select natural color under automatic or digital camera correction under photoenhance as well as select standard people etc. I've had some pretty disapointing results in printing stuff that looks great on the screen and I'm just wondering if anybody has had expirience with which settings yield the best prints?

Also which program do you find is the best to print from? I'm assuming photoshop is a good one?

Silly Boy:

I have an epson tutorial disk from an epson workshop that I can give you this saturday for the shoot I invited you to attend. According to epson, you should only set the printer preference to the highest setting depending on your paper. Then in Photoshop, since you have a cheap printer (4 color inks?) go to print with preview, set to Adobe RGB 98', and set the tab to PERCEPTUAL which is better to print with for cheaper printers. This is all explained in the cdrom tutorial. They recommended that for high end work, you want photoshop to handle the printing and not the generic epson software due to color matching issues and so on, so long as your monitor is calibrated in the first place. You really want to look in to the DPI of your printer. I have seen remarkable work turned out from a 70 dollar canon or epson printer with resolutions ranging from 2440 to 4880. I just print these out for test shots, (and your birthday present calendar that I made of your girlfriend ) but for serious prints (ie. portfolio, send the images to a local high end print shop where they can chemically develop it.) I can show you a few that I use. They are extremely confidential (which I always get nervous about) which stops nude pictures of one's girlfriend from being pasted all over the internet....that is, if you're into that sort of thing

Later dude...

I feel for ya!

I also have a 785EPX. Even though it is a "cheap" printer, it is a 6 color photo printer that I have been able to get some pretty good results with. However it didn't happen right out of the box. There was a long frustrating learning curve for me with this printer. I also have an older Canon photo printer that delivered great prints right from the start but it was very slow.

The problem I had with the 785EPX was a very heavy magenta cast. At first I tried to adjust for this with the printer drivers color controls but the results were not all that great.

The best way I have found to get consistent results was to forget about all the special modes of the printer driver, like PhotoEnhance4, Automatic etc. First I visually calibrated my moniter using Adobe Gamma. Then I set my software to use color management. I use PSP8. When I make a print I set the printer driver to 'Custom > ICM'. My prints have looked pretty good after this.

I still get a slight magenta cast in the shadow areas when I use EPSON Premium Glossy Photo Paper. However, this seems to fade away after the print sits a little while. Kinda like when I tried my hand at printing Cibachromes.

Hope this helps.

One more question:

When do you do this do you even tell the printer what type of paper you're going to use or do you just leave it all default and print directly from your software?
