since every lens i own is crappy, except that one minolta maunual focus that served me so well before I started down the Auto focus path, I decided to put them up against each other. images are only cropped, other than that straight off the 10D

first is the canon 50mm f/1.8

second is the Tamron 28-200 f/3.5-5.6, however I can never get 3.5 out of it...

Hey Clint, nice comparison. That Tamron shot is mushy but not as bad as mine would have been. I was also never able to get less than F4 from my Tamron.

I have since returned the Tamron and picked up the Canon 28 - 200 which already seems way better. I can tell in the viewfinder if something is in focus whereas I couldn't with the Tamron. I still have to dump pics off and check them out but I think this was the right move. And it only cost me another $50 which is nothing for $3500 worth of gear.

I wonder if there is a site that tests and rates lenses and gives samples. That would be cool.

Anyway, take it easy. Thanks for the post.

You never get f/3.5 at 28mm? If you do, then that is how a variable aperture zoom works. It's maximum aperture at 28mm is f/3.5 and it's maximum aperture at 200 is f/4.5. If that is how your lens works then it is working properly.

As for the test shots, the only thing really crappy about Canon's 50 f/1.8 is the build quality. It's a really sharp prime especially for the money. I have the original version of the EF 50 f/1.8 and it has a better build and metal lens mount.

Rich what I was saying is that the lens is supposed to be a 3.5-5.6 vari.

but Have never seen it at 3.5 on my 10D. f/4 is the widest it will do! But I did see 3.5 on my Elan 7 and Rebel 2000.

I agree, I was just poking fun at myself. seeing as how I don't have any L glass But just for grins I have upped the contrast and sharpness on the 10D and the results have been rather pleasing in my test today.

But I could see that on a print 20x30 or so alot of imperfections could show up with my cheap glass.

and post them on EBAY. Take the money you get and run.

Got to www.KEH.COM and one or two good factory, f2.8 zooms for your body, or at minumum, the pro-grade variables (In Nikon, the ones with ED glass, but then upgrade them at first chance).

Save your money for any additional ones.

Odds are that lens you 'can't do without' you will find you can get along with just fine.

You are better off with one good lens and 3 pieces of pooh.

IMHO.

That's what I did 4 years ago. I have never had any regrets.

Current Arsenal is: D100/N80 80-200 f2.8 (not SF), 35-70f2.8 and 18-35ED 3.5-4.something (the 2.8 zoom is in the $1500 range, and this one with ED glass is great) 50mm 1.8.
