Hi guys!

Recently I saw a few videos on Youtube demonstrating how off-camera flash can be used instead of the strobe to achieve the same results. It also further said that flash are more flexible in the sense that they can be tucked away behind a certain object and not be seen in the frame and so on.

My question is, what is the pros and cons of using a flash instead of a traditional strobe? Does the power output has anything to do with is? In what situation would it be more suitable to use one over the other?

Cheers!

Technically, flash and strobe are the same basic thing. I assume you are talking about speed lights v studio strobes.

I prefer the studio strobes because there is more control and I can get more light if I want it.

The advantages of studio strobes are (in part):
Lots of modifiers available
Power output
Control
Modeiling lights
You don't have to change batteries

The advantages for speed lights are (in part)
Size
Portability
Wieght

Yopu'll learn fater with studio strobes because you can see more of what you're getting to begin with. You'll probably learn even more of you're a beginner using some sort of constant lights where you really do get what you see.
