I'm getting ready to move up from my Canon XTI to a 7D. I'm wondering if the kit lens is worth the extra $200 or so? I have the kit lens from the XTI 18-55mm, Canon 50mm F1.8 and a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 (great lens). I do mostly portraits and glamour. I do need to pick up a long zoom in the near future, should I save the $200 and put it towards a zoom lens? Also I don't have any IS lenses yet.

The Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a pretty good lens and well worth the $200. That being said I already had the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 when I got the 28-135 with my 50D. I found the Tamron to be much sharper then the canon. The 28-135 got very little use unless I just needed the extra reach. The Tamron stayed on my camera 99% of the time. Until I got my Canon 70-200 2.8L.

Thanks Mfharper. Also since I'm on a tight budget, whats every ones thoughts on a Canon refurb 7D?

Lumpy53,
I have yet to see a kit lens that I'm really all that happy with. (keep in mind you're talking to a guy who likes to buy L glass.) One of the things that I would find annoying about this particular lens is the shifting f stop. Instead of being able to set your camera and then zoom however you want to, this lens will have you either always working at 5.6, or you'll constantly be adjusting the output of your lights to match every time you zoom in or out. And 5.6 is not that fast!

I'd save your money for getting that zoom that you really want later on.

I own a 7D and I love it, though knowing what I know now I would have moved straight to the 5D Mark II for the full frame sensor. Even so, the 7D has a lot of features to love, and handles itself very well.

I don't own a 7D, but in general I don't have any trouble buying a refurbished product. I own many from camera's, televisions, computers to name a few. I've had great luck with all of them.

I bought the 7D with the 28-135 lens. I use it as my walk-around lens when I go out with the family.
