I placed a grid into a reflector on my Hensel C-Light 1000 which is a constant light.
When I looked back the center of the grid was smoking so I stopped.

Was the smoke just paint burning off. Can I use this techniqe after it burns off?

Could be paint, could be dust (most dust is human body cells!). Anything in front of a Constant light source has the potential to smoke or worse to go up in flames. That's why they were once called "Hot Lights"...not because the light temperature was warm but rather the bastardly things got HOT. Smoke or not it's best to ensure that you have some form of protection if the bulbs were ever to blow...it's one thing to cook dust but another to have burning hot glass/metal land on a model. It's *not* appreciated.
