Greetings,
Well, I've been researching this a bit and it seems that beauty dish design falls into two basic camps. First, there is the basic pan reflector style such as Elinchrom, Alien Bees, Flashpoint and a host of others. Next, is the Mola style which has a unique shape. The speedotron Blackline dish has a very similar shape.

So, here's the question, Which shape is better?

I have Flashpoint monolights (series I and series II) and so I can use a dish from Alien Bees on my older lights or I can use the Flashpoint 16",21" or 27" dishes for the Flashpoint II lights. I can also EASILY modify the Speedotron to work with either one by simply replacing the flange on the back. I can save some coin by using either the Flashpoint (16,21) or the AB dish. The 27" Flashpoint is about the same cost as the Speedotron (the modification will add about $20 for the flange). Your thoughts and/or comments are welcomed. The dish will be used for shots of H.S. seniors.
Thanks
Mel

In my experience, beauty dishes are not the best modifier for HS seniors. As a general rule teenagers tend to have skin blemishes and most are not that great at doing their own make-up. Beauty dishes are not really a very soft light source, unless your using a professional make-up artist for all your seniors you may want to try a large soft box instead.
