This is a question for anyone who is or has worked with video. I have been looking around to expand my horizons and I recently bought a Sanyo 10 megapixel HD video camera. The camera writes the video to SD cards which I then upload into my computer.

I have only just started to do any video editing and on my first attempt I hit the wall. I have only the most basic knowledge of video but even I am familiar with the MPEG3 standard and I thought I was getting it with the video camera I bought but apparently not. The video camera I have records in MPEG4 format which I have never heard of and unless I am looking in all the wrong places not a lot of others have heard of it either. I am guessing that since this format is MPEG4 versus MPEG3 it is a newer and supposedly "better" format but to me with the video editing software I have now, Windows Movie Maker I can't use it or do any type of editing on it at all.

The only player I can find to even look at my video is Quick Time which is OK but I want to do more than just look at videos.

I am hoping that someone can shed some light on this MPEG4 format. What is it, what makes it better? What editing software can be used it edit it?

Thanks.

Here's a FAQ page that hopefully will answer your questions.

For simply playing an MPEG4 file... check out VLC media player. It rocks socks.

It's becoming a much more common format. Something to look up might be it's short-hand form... simply "MP4". Ipods and many other portable devices use it as "standard" more often than not, for video. MP3 is sound only, MP4 is video.

For editing... check out Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere Pro. Both can really handle all your video editing needs MUCH more easily than Windows Movie Maker. However... if needed, there are a ton of free converters out there that can convert your MP4 video into anything else that you want (AVI, WMV, etc)... which will then allow you to drop whatever file format you need into Windows Movie Maker and you can get back down to your editing.

Thanks to both of you for the info. From the response from Goldy and my limited experiences I was afraid I had gotten a video camera with an abandoned format but maybe not.

I am curious about the format converters. Shortly after I got my video camera and realized the compatibility issues I did a search for format converters and didn't find much of anything but I will take another look.

Thanks again!
