I'm almous sure that this subject is not new here on the forum and therefore I hope you wont take hard on me since I'm bringing it again but maybe on different point of view.
I'm Canon User - 5D camera I have, but few days ago I had great oportunity to buy a good used camera for small money from my friend and I did.
It is D300 Nikon camera.
What I want now is to learn more about how to managed a good White balance on Canon and Nikon-since I have them both.
I know about grey card for preset on Canon, it is working OK for me but not all the time, must be some tricks that I do not know, hope to learn.

For Nikon I haven't got any knowledge and would appreciate your help.

On the other hand I heard about Nikon profiles for each camera in Adobe Lightroom or in photoshop and that some pro photographers are using it and that like it a lot.
Is there any good tutorial on how to learn to manage white balance for digital cameras both Canon and Nikon.
I would appreciate any feed back on this matter, or to point onsome good tutorial for this issue.
I even have a Kodak color checker card but do not know how to use it properly.
Thanks in advance.

A Grey Card since it is one dimensional (ie only Gray) has limited uses for digital photography. I, and many others have had very good success with the Photo Vision target which is Black, Gray, and White all on the same card.

Basically to use it you take a photo of the Photo Vision Target with your camera on Manual making sure to fill the frame with the Target. Then you look at the in camera Histogram. When you have your exposure right you will see three spikes evenly spaced across the Histogram and you will want to insure that the spikes are slightly skewed towards the Overexposed side of the Histogram (for Canon cameras that is the right side). This insures that you don't blow out any highlights.

Once you have your exposure right you do a Custom White Balance and select the Photo Vision as your Custom White Balance reference frame. Also, if you work in RAW be sure not to delete the Photo Vision reference frame when you upload your images to your computer. You can use the reference frame to synch your images in RAW post production.

There is a great CD that comes with the Photo Vision target that explains better than I can how to use it and how to set it up for various circumstances. I was having a lot of problems with exposures and a horrible lack of consistency before I got the Photo Vision target and now I am a lot happier and definitely more consistent in my exposures. Try it and let us know how it works for you. Good luck.
