I'm in the market for a new studio flash system, either a power pack and heads or a set of four mono heads, my Spedotron gave up the ghost after more than twenty years of rough and neglected service. I'm filling the void right now by using several Nikon SB800s and 600s and the Creative Lighting System built into my D200s and D300s with softboxes, and umbrellas as needed but I'd like to get some more power since I am a bit limited on what I can do right now. I'd like to try and keep it below 3,000 dollars if possible but know you get what you pay for hence the old trusty Speedotron black series unit. It's beyond repair and a replacement powerpack would be over 2,000 plus the heads would need major repair if not replacement too so I might as well just bite the bullet and start fresh. Like I stated, I want four heads, the availability or different reflectors, soft boxes, snoots, and beauty dishes. Stands and booms I got. I'm open to suggestions on brand. Any opinions pro and con?

Since you are already familiar with Speedotron, why not check out the used market for them. Black line packs show up with regularity on that famous internet auction site and not doubt others and the prices seem downright cheap to me. Same with heads. But new is nice, too.

Yeah, I'd stay with the Speedotron line. You already have the modifiers so you won't have to spend money on those, when buying lights people often overlook the modifiers. They aren't cheap and they make a huge impact on the light quality.

Paul Buff Ultra lights are really pretty good. I expect you won't get 20 years out of them, but they are easily repaired, have an excellent warranty and lots of features like 5 stop, step less, individual head, power control. 4 heads would run about $1600.00
