Ok, so I bought a couple cheap 12x52 strip boxes off eBay and they came with Universal Speedrings. Anyone know how to attach a Universal Speedring to an Alien Bee strobe?

I have some AB speedrings, but the stripbox poles are smaller than normal, so they are loose when I put them into the holes on the AB speedring. So ... I'm curious to see if I can somehow attach the universal rings to my Alien Bees. Thanks.

You can't, they aren't universal (if you consider the meaning of universal to be that they fit all lights.)

They call them universal so that people who don't know any better will buy them because they think they will work with any light. ... I only know of 2 lights that use that mount and I'm not sure one of them is even still made.
The loose poles in the AB speed rings won't make any real difference in how it works, as long as it isn't flopping around too much they shouldn't pop out. You can always wrap some gaffers tape or something around the end of the pole.

Ernie's right - the "universal" speed rings aren't. I learned trying to find speed rings for the old White Lightnings.

You probably can find something to thicken the poles of your strip boxes. Tape, as he suggested, or possibly something more permanent - appropriately sized brass shim, for example - can make the poles fit snugly in the speed rings you already own. The only other issue would be if there were an issue with the spacing, but it sounds as if that wasn't a problem.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is...

I thought that price you told me as a bit on the low end. Even the Amvona stuff tends to go for just a little bit more than that.

Good luck. I'm sure you can make it work.

Thanks for all the advice. You got me thinking ... and I solved my problem. As you recall, the "universal" speedring wouldn't mount to my Alien Bee strobes ... and the softbox poles were very loose in my Alien Bee speedrings. So, I removed the center portion of the Alien Bee speedring (four screw hold it in place) and added it to the "universal" speedring (the four hand twist screws hold it in place) ... and it works perfectly (the poles are tight and in the correct position, and it mounts nicely on my Alien Bees)!
