White balance and "grey cards" are two different things. Grey cards are used to establish light reflectance value ( brightness) and may or may not ( usually not) be color neutral.

High quality gray cards are totally color neutral and may or may not be gray.

I do not recommend the devices that you put over your lens as they cannot accurately work with on camera flash any more than auto white balance can. They have to be pointed at the light source to be accurate and you can't do that with "on camera" flash.

My personal favorite is the Whi-Bal Cards as it is durable, inexpensive and very accurate and each one is tested to be sure it falls within specs.

I have one of the Exp Disk, It seems to work well, I only got one disk (77mm) I just hold it up to the end of the len what ever size lens I use. I am not a Pro and find things that work for me. Its a little easier to carry and us the disk for me, but most of my shots are fast action tactical training, and I can't get the Swat guys to hold the cards without wanting to shot them as targets. got to love your team mates.

With respect to swat teams, they don't have to hold the cards. You can hold them yourself (remember to duck) in similar light and/or set them in the scene. You can make the reference frame, before or after the shooting too, (camera that is).
