I've being experiencing problems to fire a slave unit.

Here is what I'm doing:

I have a 580 ExII as master unit off camera.
It is connected through a pocket wizard, so I have to use it on Manual Mode.

The slave unit is an 430 ExII.
To be fired from the Master, the slave must be on ETTL. Is that correct???
I mean, can I use the master unit in Manual mode while the slave in ETTL???

Obviously I don't have the true ETTL on neither but, since I have all set up done on the master unit manually I supose the slave could get this information through ETTL.
Am I right or wrong about this???

Well, the problem is that doing this way I've being experiencing problems.
Sometimes the slave fires and sometimes it doesn't. (most times it doesn't)

Both speedlites are being used to light my background indoors at no more than 1,5 meters from each other.
Yes they are "looking" straight to each other with no obstacles in between.

Where am I going wrong?
Manual and ETTL can't work together?
How can I fire my slave if I don't have ETTL on Master Unit??

I use both on same channel and for the Ratio the Master is A and Slave is B.

Tnks!!!

Hi,
I'm not an expert with this flashes but I use 430EX flash for few time as slave or main light off camera and I had problems. So I went to some forums and some says that this flash has problem when used as main flash off camera triggered by wireless triger on camera. And that is true since I try to used and never fires untill my Metz54 fires everytime.
Also, I try to use it on flash brecket with red eye flash triggering and never ever made it flash.....
Try using for example 550EX and see if it work so you will have an idea that the flash is problem....
Maybe somebody else with more expiriance will help more....
regards Zak

Thanks Zakd but this is not exactly the problem.
I don't have problems to fire the 580 EXII unit with the pocket wizard.
The problem is that this master unit is not firing the slave.

This is my set up
Camera -> 580 EXII (Master) -> 430 EXII (slave)

Whereas camera fires Master (on Manual mode) through Pocket Wizard (wireless), and Master should fire slave (on ETTL mode) through ETTL mode.

On 580 EXII manual they always consider the Master unit to be on camera and on ETTL mode to fire slave units.
Since I don't have my Master on camera and I have to use it on Manual mode, maybe this is causing the problem.

My question is:
Can I have Slave on ETTL while Master on Manual???

Thnks

I wonder if this is something simple like making sure your slave flash is set for optical trigger mode instead of looking for something else. Something similar happened to me and it was because I had the flash in normal instead of slave mode.

Good Luck

I have the slave on ETTL, same chanel as Master and Ratio set to B.
The red light keeps blinking. I guess this means it is ready for wireless triggering. Right??

Alec,

The 580 in master mode needs to "talk" to the camera in order to send proper signals to the slave flash.

The 580 must be mounted on the camera (or tied to the camera with the proper ETTL cord) in order to properly communicate with the slave.

Since you are using the Pocket Wizard, you should obtain another receiver for the secondary flash.

Or set up your secondary flash for triggering via optical slave.

Thanks Nathan.
That was the information I was looking for.
I have decided to buy the STE2 to be sure I will have a good result.

I just have found out that there is a new pocket wizard that works with TTL trough radio transmission.
If the price wasn't so high, it would be the perfect choice for me.

In case anyone is interested on it, check the video below

Thank you guys for the help!!!
