I have a new Dell 330MT with 4GB RAM running MS XP Pro and CS4 with a dedicated 80GB scratch hard drive. In CS4 the available RAM shows only about 1.6GB. In CS3 on another computer with 4GB I set the /3GB switch in the boot.ini file and did get more RAM available, but I have read several threads advising not to do this. Problem is, I am currently getting an error message "Process could not be completed because of lack of RAM" or somthing of the sort. I have not been able to use the Content-Aware procedure even once without getting this error message. Anyone have any advice on getting to more than 1.6GB in CS4?

Thanks in Advance,
Doc

problem with that is that cs4 isn't 64 bit for mac until a "point" update.

which is bollocks if you ask me. that's what they get for putting stupid inside them i guess.

Ahh yes, but since the underlying OS (Leopard) is fully 64 bit, Photoshop can use it's entire (or close to it) 32 bit address space which is waaaayyy more than 32 bit windows can offer. I run 6GB of RAM in my Mac Pro and allocate 3072MB to Photoshop as the max.

Excellent point...I didn't think of that

As an aside, I'm a tad miffed that I'm seeing and hearing of people using CS4...I PREordered the CS4/LR2 bundle and have yet to receive it :tantrum:

I set the boot.ini 3GB switch and now have 2.7GB with no problems so far. Life is good.

Mac also has issues addressing more than 4gb of memory. It works a little better than how 32bit Window deals with it but not by much. I have both Mac and PC's actually use my Mac's more for editing than the PC's but 64bit CS4 on the PC is sooo much better in ever way, its runs a whole lot faster and nothing like using that 16gb of memory I bought a year ago finally. I'd never use CS4 on a Mac until they address the 64bit issue and Adobe is saying its not a minor point update its a rewrite of the whole code base. They blame Apple for pulling the rug out from under them by not continuing to support Cocoa in a 64 bit environment. So anyone waiting for 64bit Mac version of CS4 I wouldnt hold your breath insiders say it'll be CS5 before that happens. Of course anything could happen but its unlikely. Go see CS4 running on a Windows 64 bit box before you say its not a big deal. Personally think the upgrade it worth it for that feature if they did nothing else.

I also tested XP 64bit on my Mac Pro with CS4 and its works great as well. I understand XP on a mac isnt OS X and I surely love OS X and will switch back once we see a 64 bit version of CS4 for it. But until then I'm loving Windows 64bit.
