Not to get into the technical end of things. But just what is it that makes an image from a digital back so much better then a digital SLR camera ? Just what is it that your eye can see that says " that shot is from a digital back "

Thanks..

Mike

Hi Mike,
In the days when we all use to shoot with film, have you ever used 120 film or just shot with 35mm cameras?

The detail produced between the two types of film was as noticable as a 110 was to a 35mm....or to put it in digital terms....your cell phone photos to your DSLR.

Just look at some of FrankD's work with his Leaf camera/backs.

The only down side with these digital backs compared to a DSLR is the size of image it produces requires premium computers to process the image with lots of RAM and storage capacity (not mentioning the cost of the backs/cameras). In the film era...the larger negative didn't require as much additional expense as that when compared to shooting with a film SLR.

Thanks Gord,

Heck the 35mm I shot with in school was a Pentex k1000. As soon as I got my hands on a digital camera I never went back. I looked at the samples from the new 5D and to me it is still not as close to a digital back as it should be by now. The technology has been out as long as the Digital backs have been around. I love FrankD's work that is for sure. I guess it's all in the detail that makes the most diference.

Yes, but comparing a digital back to a 5D or other DSLR would be the same as comparing a DSLR to a point and shoot digital camera.

The size of the sensor makes all the difference just as I was referring to in my earlier post. With a 120 film compared to a 35mm film - when photographing the same scene, the 120 film's negative captures more detail due to the size of the negative produced. This would be the same when comparing the images of the same scene shot with a digital back or a DSLR.

Also, do not think that a cameras (P&S, DSLR, or Digital Back) of the same megapixel rating will capture the same detail. The larger the sensor - the larger the pixel - the more detail/information captured. Just compare a photo taken with a 12meg P&S and a 12meg DSLR!

Personally I believe that the P&S cameras maxed out at 6-8meg, then became too noisy and better software was needed and in turn required more user input - so the functionality of P&S was lost.

So people turned from these large megapixel P&S cameras to the consumer level DSLRs to get better images and larger prints. Now we have the megapixel race with DSLRs which we will someday see the quality of image being maxed out as it did with P&S camera sensors. Especially when comparing the images of a DSLR image to the same scene taken with a Digital Back (again, size makes a big difference as it did with the P&S to DSLR or the 35mm to 120 film).

Technology can only take you so far before it becomes maxed out.

Well, to pretty much reiterate what Bodyscapes said, the main difference between a digital back and a dslr in digital term, it's resolution. I was speaking with a fellow G1 member some time back (it may be out of date, but I believe it still holds as a good example) and he got a digital back that produces 22mp images. To give you an idea, I use a Nikon D2Xs, which, when released was Nikon's top of the line (now the D3) that produces a 12.4mp image, so a 10mp increase using the digital back over a high end dslr.
