I have seen and used different methods on this style.
One is where you surround the bed with a wall of softbox style cloth (can't remember the name, thin swimsuit material) and you light it from the sides shooting through.
(I'll insert a picture later taken with the above technique)

The other method I have used was when I'm shooting down I place the main light above model and to her right shooting down. I then place a fill light on her left side lower.
(I'll see if I have one I took from this technique)

It would be nice if the more experienced commented though!

For this bed shot, I used a two-light setup --- a 5' Octobox with an Alien Bee 800 over my left shoulder and in front of the model and an Alien Bee 400 with a 40-degree grid and Bastard Amber gel to the right and behind the model as a hairlight/rim light. There was also a floor to ceiling mirror behind the model. Is this the type of lighting you're looking for?

DUH ... sorry about my previous post, I didn't see that you said you wanted to shoot from above.

Here's a shot from above. Lighting was one Alien Bee 400 inside a 30x60 softbox with egg crate grid to camera right and above model.

Marty, Your photos are always so beautiful. In the photographs above how are you setting your WB to gets such great skin tones. Also, would you mind sharing how do you make your skin so smooth and uniform. I'm envious.

Hahaha ...LOL First, start with a beautiful model with great skin tone.

The image of Awilda on the cranberry satin sheets was shot with my D100 at Cloudy-3 WB. In Photoshop I added a duplicate layer and applied the Diffused Glow to that layer, then did a Levels adjustment to raise the yellow level, then adjusted the opacity of that duplicate "glow" layer to 55%. To finish off the image I made a duplicate of the glow layer and applied a slight Gaussian Blur to that layer and set it at 55% to soften the overall look. I used the eraser to remove the blur from her eyes, mouth and necklace.

So now that you know exactly how to do it ... let's see what you come up with.
