Alright, so I knew it was too good to be true, but I figured that I would only be out a few hundred bucks to give it a try.

I recently purchased a lens off eBay for about 270 dollars. What was it? An Opteka 650-1300 with a 2x converter (moving to 1300-2600). I figured, hey, give it a shot.

I would say this, you get what you pay for. This lens is not high quality and not very good for much of anything except taking shots of the moon...and even then, it isn't very good at it.

First, the thing is just straight heavy. I didn't expect it to be light, but wow is it a lead weight! The only way that you can use it is with a tripod. Second, the mechanism for moving from 650 up is by loosening a ring and sliding the lens out. This causes the lens to bow when it is slide all the way out into the 1300 position. Finally, the images are always very soft. At first I thought this was an issue with the fact that it is manual focus and I have horrible eyes, but I have come to discover that it was not the problem. I have had people with good eyes focus it in the viewfinder and the shots come out the same...soft almost to the point of being blurry. Could this be due to the atmosphere? Sure, but I think that it has more to do with the low quality optics used in the lens.

Overall, if you are looking for a cheap super telephoto lens, stop. This one is not worth the nearly 300 bucks that I paid. Save your money and get a high quality one...much more expensive but much better quality construction and optics.

That is my 2 cents...

those lenses have been around for ages under various names... they are geared to your classic " shutterbug" amateur ... who may only use it once or twice a year... and has a budget ...

That is what I found...but really, the only thing that I found that could be shot with this lens is the moon. Everything else is really bad from what I have experienced. Nothing even worth a snapshot to me. But, hey, it was a fun experiement.
